Illegal waste dump mapping
Mapping the illegal waste dumps of Central Hungary and monitoring them with the community.
The EMLA Association and the Waste Work Association (Hulladék Munkaszövetség) mapped the illegal waste dumps of the Central Hungary region with the professional support of the Ministry of Environment and Water. The first step was to make the computer system “smarter”: we adapted the processing steps used on remote sensing material in the literature to the Hungarian environment and especially to the base data available. The identified areas were then checked in the field and organised into a database.
As a result, a professionally acceptable and complete database of illegal waste dumps was created for the surveyed area, so the clearing process can continue. Through the website tisztamagyarorszagert.hu the community can monitor the process, comment, and even report new dumps, which helps clear the piles of waste even after the project ends. The awareness raising value and message of this contributes to less abandoned waste in the future.
